Baby Sleep Problems: How Can You Help?
Baby sleep problems are common especially during the first year. You may notice your child may even develop separation anxiety. You can identify this when your child cries in the middle of the night and only calms down when you carry them. Baby sleep problems are something that you have to be patient with. Just like how you were patient with learning how to breastfeed your baby, you should remain calm and go through it one step at a time.
Before looking into baby sleep problems, you should know how long should your baby be sleeping. Most babies sleep for 12-16 hours per day and this includes their night time sleep routine which should be for 9-12 hours. You should know that your little one will also take a couple of naps during the day. Their nap times last between 30 minutes – 2 hours.
Baby Sleep Problems and Positions
During the first six months of your baby’s birth, it is better to not share a bed with them. Room sharing is fine, but its safer to let your baby sleep in their crib alone. Room sharing is encouraged as you can keep an eye on your baby and it also makes feeding easier.
Besides, you should always ensure that your baby is sleeping on their back and not their stomach or side. When you put your baby in their crib, put them down on their back. This would prevent Sudden Infant Death Syndrome. Moreover, you should use a sleeping surface that is firm for your baby. Use a bed sheet that would fit securely over your baby’s mattress. You should keep your baby’s sleeping area clear.
Sometimes baby sleep problems happen because they are distracted by the things in their crib. Watch out for anything else that could cause hard for your baby as they sleep. Also, avoid overheating your baby during their sleep time. If you notice the weather to be hot do not wrap your baby up tightly in a blanket and ensure they wear loose fitting clothes.
Making Bedtime Easier
The best way to help your little one cope with their baby sleep problems is to make their time leading to their bedtime calming. Avoid having too much of activities that are hyped up and involve a lot of movement. Give your baby a nice warm bath before their bed time, read them bedtime stories or sing them a lullaby. Repeat the same steps everyday at night. This will help your baby understand over weeks to come that those activities mean its bedtime.
One way to get your baby to sleep on their own. Is to put them in the crip while they are drowsy. If your baby wakes up and cries try to let them settle down on their own for a few minutes. Only if they don’t stop crying or if it gets louder then you should pick them up. If you know your baby isn’t hungry, sick or has a dirty diaper give them a few minutes and they might fall back to sleep.
Use soothing techniques to calm your baby try stroking their cheek gently, talking to them in a calm manner or even whistling to them. Different babies calm down with different techniques. Offer words of comfort to make your baby feel better, remind them that you are there.
Baby Sleep Problems In The Middle Of The Night
Unlike adults, babies may not know how to go back to sleep if they wake up in the middle of the night. To overcome baby sleep problems in the middle of the night, try calming them down with your voice first. If that doesn’t work, try stroking their cheeks or rubbing their belly. Only if they really can’t go back to sleep, you should lift them.
Don’t allow your baby to be too dependent on you. Teach them to fall asleep on their own. Holding them too much whenever they wake up may make your baby do it often as they want to get your attention. Baby sleep problems usually goes away once your baby gets used to their sleep patterns over time.
